Social environment - Parity school model
The School Centre of St. Vigil in Enneberg includes three municipalities in Gadertal and is therefore relatively large. Three elementary schools in the municipality of St. Martin in Thurn (in St. Martin, in Kampill and in Untermoj) and three in the municipality of St. Vigil in Enneberg (in St. Vigil, in Wellschellen and in Enneberg) are part of the School Centre. Additionally, there are two high schools (in St. Vigil and in St. Martin; the last one is also visited by students from the municipality of Wengen). Hence, roughly 450-500 boys and girls are yearly registered in the School Centre of St. Vigil in Enneberg.
The population in Gadertal gradually increases and the territory becomes more and more attractive to foreign people. As a consequence, in the municipalities of St. Vigil and St. Martin a high amount of people live from tourism. The latter one is in constant growth in Ladin valleys and offers wellbeing and jobs. In small villages the agricultural activity is still cultivated and important.
Shifting focus, we find that the single schools substantially diverge from village to village. While the number of students in smaller villages is relatively low (10-20), it is way higher in others (more than 100). The socioeconomic and cultural situation of girls and boys also differs. In larger villages most of the people live from tourism and are considerably influenced by other cultures. In smaller villages many children live in peasant families and set increased weight on their Ladin culture.
Although Ladin is the main language in the School Centre of St. Vigil, the schools are organized after a parity language system. This multilingual model prescribes the use of Italian and German for basic subjects whereas Ladin remains at the same time essential being used as supporting language. This model puts the same amount of weight on all three languages and gives students the possibility to learn Ladin, Italian and German in an integral manner.
Nowadays, next to Ladin and its culture, more and more languages and cultures coexist in Gadertal. This leads to a multicultural and multilingual aspect from which boys and girls can profit from by acquiring tolerance and knowledge.
